ALL ABOUT

KRISTINA CLELAND

When I work with a client, I explore the whole person. With this approach, I can help the client uncover hidden feelings and experiences. It is difficult for people in our society to communicate their feelings for several reasons. Many individuals have defenses up or believe that their feelings and emotions will be judged which can create stress, anxiety, and fear. By releasing your blockages and fears, you will take risks, and with these risks, you will develop a better understanding of self. My goal is to open this pathway for each individual so that you can realize your full potential and develop your own inner strength.

My goal as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist is to provide you with support and guidance to help you gain self-awareness, an understanding of your environment, and provide you with the tools to aid you in living a happy and successful future.

Experience & Education

I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from San Diego State University. Subsequently, I received my Master’s degree in Marriage & Family Therapy (MMFT) from the University of Southern California. I am listed in the state of California as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist #LMFT111849, and have extensive experience with adolescents, adults, families, couples, and groups in both the residential and outpatient treatment settings.

I am a member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists—CAMFT.

Other Experience

Homeless Health Care Los Angeles (HHCLA)

I worked with the homeless population, suffering from co-occurring disorders. I conducted individual therapy, counseling, and group therapy. While my patients did not live on the facility grounds, I was able to successfully utilize a myriad of therapy techniques, such as evidence-based therapy/ analysis, a personalized client-centered approach to mind and body well-being, individual counseling, group therapy, and drug and alcohol addiction management. These practices were conducted amongst a diverse spectrum of clients and topics. I conducted a Woman’s group, which was a safe place for adult women, to discuss issues and receive necessary support and feedback. I was also very active in the “Art Group” which gave patients the opportunity to engage in self-expression, thus aiding in improving their overall mental health.

California Institute of Behavioral Analysis—Leafwing Center

I was an applied behavior analyst working with children on the “autism spectrum,” in the Torrance Unified School District. We used the “Applied Behavior Analysis” method, as this approach to therapy was the only type of research proven to work with children on the Autism Spectrum. My work included working with children of autism, in their specific public-school setting, during their routine school day, and then conducting home-based sessions to incorporate the family into learning and practicing task-driven programs to help them understand and cope with effective ways to manage situations and struggles encountered with their child going forward. This method has proven to not only benefit the child’s daily life, but to help the loved ones feel comfortable and stress-free when dealing with the many complex circumstances encountered. Not only do disabilities effect the patient, but they also impact the entire family.

College Hospital, Long Beach

I work with adults with severe mental illness and co-occurring disorders. I conduct individual and group psychotherapy in an intensive outpatient setting. I facilitate a Women’s support group, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) group, Seeking Safety group, and an Art Therapy group. This experience includes working with couples and families.

Clear Recovery Center

I work with individuals who struggle with substance use disorders as well as mental health disorders. I work as a therapist doing individual and group psychotherapy with those struggling with addiction, depression, anxiety, PTSD, grief and loss issues, and trauma.

I specialize in working with children, teens, and adults experiencing symptoms of depression, low self-esteem, and anxiety. In addition, I specialize in working with individuals struggling with addiction, and the underlying issues that drive the addiction.
